Tiling works – what to take note for homeowners

As an interior designers, we have seen so much of homeowners’ posting about the quoted prices, sizes and also the workmanship of tiling works. Let us share with you on points to take note during selection of tiles

Types of tiles

There are mainly 2 main types of tiles you should have seen across the tiles shop.

In general, there are two main Porcelain and Ceramic.

Ceramic tiles are usually lower in price but they will have more to consider. Such as, they cant do 45 deg cut join and have to use PVC capping if you do not want to see the different colour on the side. Ceramic tiles are generally glossy surface. They are also more likely to be more water absorbent, which will lead to grouting changes in colour quickly. Some ceramic tiles will have hairline cracks surface out too, mostly subway tiles in general.

Porcelain tiles are more durable. More prints and design to select. May cost more depends on design and even country made. More prints and design also means Grout colour can only be match to closer one we have in market.

Size of tiles

Tiles, they are baked. There will be chance to have certain piece that is not 100% even. Imagine baking a cupcake or muffin, there will be no full even surface.

Each individual piece will have certain areas that will be uneven when laid. The bigger or longer the tiles the higher the chance.

Grouting

Material and labour cost included in your laying of tiles quotation. Standard grout brand we usually recommend would be the Davco or AM50. Sadly, Davco choices of colour grout got lesser already.

IDs usually used the sample piece of tiles to match with the colour chart. IDs would be able to match easier cos they have already used and seen the grouting end product too!

Homeowner may tends to source for online different types of grout such as silicon or epoxy grout. Personally, try at your own risk. :/

Floor Trap

Tips: Floor traps inside your bathroom are the indication of how much space you will have for your shower. Some IDs will share with you the space you have after site visit while some may expect you to know. Usually there will be 1 for wet shower area and 1 for dry area, near to basin / WC.

Generally, stainless steel floor trap will be provided if you overlay or lay new floor tiles. As they are slimmer and nicer compared to white pvc.

There are also option to use tiled finished floor trap which is thicker that can be use for hacked bathroom floor tiles. This is because after hacking, we will have the allowance to put it to use.
